I asked for a room with a walk in shower and was very pleased with the room. I liked the location of the hotel which I have used for over 30 years. I was very impressed with reception who went beyond what I expected, all were attentive to my needs. All other staff were pleasant. I also liked the quality of the one bar meal I had.

Hotel Indigo - Durham, an IHG Hotel, hotel in Durham

Centrally located in the historic city of Durham, Hotel Indigo Durham occupies Old Shire Hall, on Old Elvet, just 5 minutes from Durham Railway station and 400 metres from Durham Cathedral and Castle....

The staff were very sympathetic to things being wrong in our room such as the TV continuously going off and we’re given drink vouchers as an apology. The beds were definitely the most comfortable beds I’ve ever had at a hotel before, it was lovely! They had blackout curtains which was great and it was very close to different restaurants and bars.

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

Cathedral is one of the finest in England.

Cathedral is one of the finest in England. Well worth a visit. Castle is housing for students so not as much access. Tour was good but noisy which made hearing difficult. Rest of town is geared around students so less interesting for us as older travelers.

Durham has a lovely city centre and an interesting historical heritage. I visit once a year. MAY/June is my favorite time, and also christmas with the christmas fair at the Cathedral is lovely. You can easily walk around Durham in a few hours. There are also parks and other areas surrounded the city that ar lovely. Visit "the Cafédral" for a cream scone and cakes! We have stayed at several hotels - our favorites are Kings Lodge Inn, and Ramshall Golf&Spa hotel. The cathedral itself is stunning and do take a guided walk! Highly recommended. The city is a university city - so do avoid coming when there are graduation ceremonies - it will be impossible to find somewhere to eat. There are several nice places to stay also. Durham has easy access to the translation for day trips to other cities. Just a short trip to York and Edinburgh. Take note that there isn't possible to visit the castle anymore, as it is now used by the university. Best evenings out ar wednesday and Fridays. I would avoid saturday..

A wonderful city of charm, beuaty and history. Great for real ale pubs, don't miss Vennels Cafe or the Cellar Door restaurant, and many other small independent shops, restaurants, pubs and other traders.

    Durham offers something for everyone.

Durham offers something for everyone. Even more for those who wish to explore the historic castle and Cathedral and surrounding streets. The city offers a comprehensive range of food and restaurants. It is accessible by road and rail. If you find steep streets challenging there are still plenty of places to pause and browse or rest and eat or drink. It is a beautiful city to visit.

A lot of pubs where the students go were scruffy and uninviting ( ripped furniture etc). Loved the areas around the cathedral, castle, town square and the river. Tour of castle was limited to 4 areas due to students living in the castle which we were not informed about when we purchased tickets. Thought it was a total waste of time going. Some nice places to eat such as the Spice Lounge just off the square,Turkish kitchen near the cathedral and the Boat Club near the river.

Very nicely stylishly furnished property. Wild garden. Comfortable beds. Quiet, pleasant location. Very convenient for amenities such as shops, pub, take-aways and small supermarket and vet all nearby. Beautiful woodland walk (Aykley Woods) a few minutes away with amazing views of Durham Cathedral. 30 mins drive to wonderful beaches. Good bus connections or you can walk into Durham City Centre in about 25 mins. We had a few family members over to celebrate my granddaughter's 18th birthday. Handy for Durham University. Very dog friendly.

The property itself is a warm, wooden interior, very cosy feel, but then with all modern amenities provided. the look and feel of a much more expensive hotel. We were made very welcome—including our little dog—and the staff were efficient and friendly. Beds soooooo comfortable. For me, who doesn’t drive, being on the bus route was great, and the 10 mins ride into Durham was definitely worth the huge saving vs a city centre hotel. will definitely book again.

The hotel had the basic amenities. Everything was clean and well maintained. Please note that I was here for longer than the average stay ( I was there for 14 or so days) I cannot praise the staff highly enough. I had a couple of personal crises with family members and the staff helped me to navigate the situations very competently and professionally. Aside from that, the staff were always receptive, helpful and attentive to any needs I had.

The location was great, and there was parking priced at a very good rate. The staff members were all wonderful. The room was lovely and had everything we needed. The room was clean, had a great selection of hot drinks and there was a fridge too. The bathroom was great and had luxury toiletries. For a hotel the bar drinks were priced well and there's a happy hour offer every day. Check out is at noon so no rushing on the morning of departure.

A great all round place with a sense of luxury. The hotel had a restaurant attached which was particularly convenient on a Sunday night . The restaurant had authentic Indian cuisine which was tasty and not too difficult for those of us who find ery spicey foods difficult. Breakfast was good . Staff very helpful with suggestions of how to best travel back and forth to the old centre of Durham.
